The Night Masquerade. Summary

1.Chapter.

The story begins under the Root (Binti's home), Binti and her family take shelter there, but she does not know where her mother is. She wakes up, realizing it was a dream-message passed on zinariya. Mwinyi and Binti left the village, she was frightened for her family and depressed. During her experience, Binti was flooded with zinariya, which gave her a glimpse of a story from her childhood where she and her family were together. However, Mwinyi woke her up because a sandstorm was coming and dogs attacked them and they rode on their Rakumi camel. Afterwards they stopped again and Binti continued to worry a lot about her family and friends. There was also a nightmare about a meduse attack and the suffering of her family.

There is also a vision of a dream that at this time decides to whom the congregation will be given. Waking up, Binti is hysterical again and Mwinyi pulls her out, telling her that everyone is actually alive and she-harmonizer of their world. They drive on, stopping along the way, Binti seeing new visions of the past and worrying about relatives. Mwinyi and Binti grow closer after talking about their past and the traditions of their peoples. Mwinyi talks about the fire grasshoppers, which are a metaphor for themselves. Mwinyi also helps Binti use zinariya. Mwinyi shares his symmetrical story with Binti.

2.Chapter.

The heroes' journey continues. Binti wakes up from another vision and, rubbing off on the almost finished otjize. Binti's astrolabe is dead, erasing her past and possible future, which is very comforting since she can no longer see the visions, after which they set off further. Later, Mwinyi tells Binti that Khoush has taken Okwu. For this Khoush set fire to a root, but many were killed by Okwu. It becomes apparent that a Khoush-Meduse war is coming. Binti experiences another tantrum over the possibility of family death. They arrived in Osemba, the town was blazing, the root was scorched. Immediately the heroes saw a circle from which the creatures from Binti's vision began to appear, made of gold. Then the aliens flew away in a ship, but one of them came up to Binti and gave her something...

3. Chapter.

The root was still burning, even though it was made of concrete. Her home, based on the roots of an ancient tree was destroyed. Binti saw the night masquerade again, only in the daytime, which was surprising since it meant great change, represented revolution and strange that Binti saw it when only men saw it. As she got closer to the house, she saw many bloody bodies. All the belongings of their house were burned or destroyed. Binti realized that Root had been set on fire because either Binti or Okwu was not near the house. Next, the heroes unexpectedly encountered Himba, after which they scattered when they saw Okwu alive. Binti was beside herself with joy. Okwu told her that he had survived because he was on his way to meet the elders when his tent was blown up. Binti's father became indignant, whereupon the Khoush general accused him of treason and blew up the root where Father ran, the family was killed. Further bombs were dropped on other houses in the city. When Okwu finished his story, a swarm of 10 meduses flew in, determined to attack Khoush unexpectedly. Binti appealed to Khimba, despite her inappropriate appearance, to assemble a council under the threat of the people's death. Mwinyi and Binti argued about the peoples' future and past. The possibility of war was evident. The Khoushes, who had been ambushed by meduse, did not return. Later, the friends headed toward the council building. As they walked, they talked about Himba traditions about their age-old trees and spirits. The Osemba house looked like some kind of sacred place surrounded by immortal trees. Its appearance resembled that of an enemy of the Himba people. People in red caftans sat around the fire. A conversation ensued in which the elders rebuked Binti and even wanted to kick her out, but Binti shifted the topic of conversation to the harmonization of the peoples, after which she left with her childhood friend Dele to discuss the past. During this conversation, Binti stubbornly tried to persuade Dele to get the council to act as parliamentarians between Khoush and meduses. Dele clearly does not understand Binti and feels she is an outsider. However, they do not have time to agree, the Khoushes arrive in their huge ships. The shelling that begins injures Okwu, who covers Binti, but he escapes at the expense of the bounce left behind by Binti. The Khoushes are not going to make peace, but the Himbs are willing to be parliamentarians. The relationship between Mwinyi and Binti strengthens, and Mwinyi's feelings for her become apparent. They kiss.

4.Chapter

The chapter begins with Binti's dream, where she is in class at the university. Here, too, she feels lonely. She wakes up. She and Okwu and Mwinyi head to the meeting point. Binti is already less sad, but when she remembers her family, she is torn with despair. At the rendezvous point are only Khoushes without a council, who are clearly unpeaceful. The Meduse ships show up next.

5.Chapter.

The council still hasn't come, and the situation is heating up. Despite the fact that the Khoushes were openly harassing Binti, she held firm and tried to remain calm. Binti gave a fiery speech, after which Chief Khoushes and Medusa agreed to a truce. Binti saw the masquerade and suddenly there was gunfire, ships were falling, it was not the Khoushes who broke their promise. The meduse king was shot by an unknown assailant, even the Khoush leader was frightened by what was happening. Binti, being in the line of fire of the two troops was mortally wounded. Okwu tried to cover her, but it was too late. Binti died.

6. Chapter.

Mwinyi screamed bitterly and violently on his knees, Okwu floated nearby in confusion. The Night Masquerade himself came to mourn Binti to her body on the battlefield. It turns out that Binti was betrayed by her native Himba people, who not only decided to prevent negotiations, but wanted to get rid of her. Dele put on his Night Masquerade costume and went to observe the negotiations, he was that Night Masquerade. Dele made excuses to his friends that he had been forced, that the Himba did not believe in Binti, that he was not to blame.

7. Chapter.

Mwinyi learns that all members of the Binti family are alive and well, they have been hiding under the Root. This strikes a chord with the heroes. Mother, father, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, cousins, and even a few family friends. They ran and jumped and sang and danced for joy, but then they learned of Binti and her bravery and tragic death... A council gathers under the root. Binti's mother grieves over her daughter's body, Mwinyi uses all her strength to comfort her. And the loving mother, who has always loved and believed in her daughter, allows her body to be sent to the rings of Saturn. Binti was mourned and bid her farewell, after which she was ready for her final journey after life.

8. Chapter

The boys set out on their journey. Mwinyi dreamed of visiting new places, though he dreaded it; he loved Binti very much even after her death. Soon they were approaching the rings of Saturn. They were both terrified to go inside Binti, but once inside, they saw nothing disgusting. They were ready to set her free.

9. Chapter

The new fish, the daughter of the ship, woke up in the face of Binti, who had been given a living body. A conversation ensued, Mwinyi was beside himself with joy, Okwu also felt a rush of emotion. The friends talked in the dining room, where another Binti was already eating supplies. The news of a living family made her incredibly happy, and she danced a simple country dance, kissing everyone happily. She began to learn about what was happening while she was dead. The Night Masquerade was a secret society of men, which really struck a chord with Binti. They began to listen to the new fish - she said Binti was dead, which really struck and hit her. Binti woke up already in space - she was like floating in water in space and not dying. But suddenly she was in the ship's cabin, it turned out that Binti and the New Fish were one in the body.

10-12. Chapter

Binti was able to leave her body again while she slept. She flew between the rings of Saturn and rejoiced in her freedom. Suddenly she saw and felt another being. It was difficult for her to hear its name because of the many fractals, but the creature was intelligent. Then she tasted cosmic dust like a new fish, enjoyed life, and suddenly woke up next to Mwinyi, who again did not understand what was happening. At Binti's request, they returned to the university. Binti was part of the ship, but she was able to distance herself from it and meet the professors. As time passed, Binti met President Haris, whom she liked. The boys were able to convince the professor to keep them for training and told him their story. The professor realized that it was necessary to stop the war, which drastically changed his plans.

13-14. Chapter

Binti walked around the university, everyone rather afraid of her because of her distinctive jellyfish-like appearance, but everyone knew her exploits. Only her friend Haifa kept in touch with Binti and learned from her what had happened. Binti came to the doctor, as it turned out she was a mix of three races and a New Fish, but even more surprisingly, she was pregnant with Okwu, which happened quite by accident. Unlike Binti, Mwinyi managed to make a lot of friends, people liked him and everyone was drawn to him. The next day, Binti rubs the ointment and flies off with New Fish, and when he returns he goes to his friends, reminiscing about plans with his friends and the new school year.
